The highlights of Île-Rousse

L'Île-Rousse, seaside town in Balagne

Founded in 1758 by the Corsican patriot Pasquale Paoli, Île-Rousse (Isula Rossa in Corsica) is today one of the most charming cities in Haute-Corse. Its name comes from the rocky islands of red porphyry that form its promontory. A lively and relaxed seaside town, it is an ideal base for exploring Balagne, its beaches and hilltop villages.

To plan your stay, the Île-Rousse Balagne Tourist Office, located on Avenue Joseph Calizi a stone's throw from Paoli Square, provides hiking maps, information on accommodations and activities.

The essentials of Île-Rousse

Paoli Square and the covered market

The heart of the city beats on Paoli Square, shaded by plane trees and lined with lively terraces. The Covered Market - 21 white columns classified as a Historic Monument since 1993 - houses the stalls of local producers every morning: sheep cheeses and brocciu AOP, handmade charcuteries, honey, wines and canistrelli (crunchy Corsican biscuits).

The Pietra Lighthouse

The walk to the Pietra Lighthouse, perched on a rocky island of red porphyry, is the most emblematic activity of Île-Rousse. Accessible on foot from the center in twenty minutes, this easy trail offers breathtaking views of the bay and the coast of Balagne. It is one of the most beautiful spots for the sunset.

Beaches and nautical activities

Île-Rousse is surrounded by fine sandy beaches with turquoise waters: the center beach, the beach of Bodri and the beach of Ostriconi (15 km towards Bastia), one of the most beautiful in Corsica, at the gateway to the Agriates Desert. The Nautical Club offers kayak, paddle, snorkeling and diving excursions from the port.

The hilltop villages: Pigna and Sant'Antonino

15 minutes away by car, Pigna is an entirely pedestrian village classified among the most beautiful villages in France, renowned for its artisan workshops (pottery, violin making, ceramics). A few minutes away, Sant'Antonino, one of the oldest inhabited villages in Corsica, offers a 360° view of the Balagne plain and the sea.

The Balagne and Calvi Tramway

In summer, the Balagne Tramway connects Île-Rousse to Calvi along the coast, with stops near the most beautiful beaches. In 50 minutes, you reach Calvi, a city dominated by one of the most impressive Genoese citadels in Corsica.
